We Can Do Hard Things

We Can Do Hard Things Sign

Lesson learned this week: You never know when your words are going to touch someone.  So always speak with honesty, from the heart. Where did this lesson come from?  Well, like most of my lessons, it came from my son. Last Friday the Governor of our state was scheduled to visit the ruins of Crestline Elementary.  It is, after all, one of the schools he is sworn to govern {and fund}.  My kids were invited to be a part of the student group that welcomed him.  We gathered in the deserted parking lot in front of the excavators and debris … Continue reading

Talking to Kids About Tragedy

“Our Hearts Are Broken”.  I don’t think truer words have ever been spoken. In the wake of yesterday’s events in Newtown, Connecticut, I have been wrestling with the question of how to tell my children. I’m sure parents all around the country are. Some say they don’t need to know. But I am not of this camp. My kids will go back to school Monday and their friends will be talking. Some kids will know a little, some will know a lot. But, most likely, there will be exaggeration a and rumors because, let’s face it, they are kids. When … Continue reading

Five Favorite Friday {Saturday} – Kid Games

CANDYLAND 77

It has been hot here in the past few days. H. O. T. So hot that my kids don’t want to play outside.  Even in the pool. So we’ve been playing games inside our house.  I hope it cools down soon, but I do love playing games with my kids. These are my all-time favorite games to play with my kids.   5.  Candyland This is my favorite toddler game.  It requires no strategy, extended thinking or skill.  All it requires is knowing colors and being able to count to two.  I love that my older kids can play with … Continue reading

Pony Royale – Ellie’s Toy Test

IMG_2723

This post is sponsored by Pony Royale. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.   Earlier this month I was selected to participate in a new toy trial.  Well, Ellie was selected to participate.  There was a new pony/princess toy coming out and they were looking for girls to try it out and give their opinion. My girl loves ponies.  And princesses.  And telling people her opinion.  And I am vigilant about making sure her toys are appropriate, educational and exercise her imagination.  … Continue reading

Task Master Job Board

IMG_1999

Ever since my kids were toddlers we’ve been trying to figure out how to teach them responsibility through chores.  We’ve always had chore charts for them, and still do.  Their rewards have changed from stickers to magnets to nickels to screen time.  Each new phase in their growing up has brought changes to our expectations and rewards. Our current system is pretty stable – as in there is no one complaining about it – which is good.  They are expected to make their beds, clean their rooms, pick up toys, and do two household chores every day.  In exchange they … Continue reading

Five Favorite Friday – Kids Book Series

Clementine-9780786838837

Summer is all about sprinklers and ice cream and bikes and berries from the garden.  It’s about fireworks and barbecues and sunscreen.  But for our family, it’s mostly about reading. Summer reading is upon us.  We spend our summers searching for fantastic books to sweep us away into other worlds, lives and adventures.  We read every chance we get.  And the books that always seem to be our favorites are books that come in a series.  After one book, we’re just not ready to let go of the characters.  We want to know what happens next.  We want to join … Continue reading

Our First Sporting Event

100 Yard Dash

I’m in the process of creating unintentional chaos in my house as I attempt to organize everything.  Pictures and post coming soon. In the mean time, I thought I’d share with you a few shots of Payton’s first ever organized sporting event.  This year was the first year he has been old enough to join the school track team.  Six practices, one meet.  It was perfect for us.  And for him.  He got his first taste of organized competition and we got our feet wet at spectating. This is when we really realized just how fast our boy is.  He … Continue reading

Short Mommy Bragging Session

IMG_8290

Ok, I have to let you in on a proud mommy moment.  Just a short bragging session letting you know how awesome my kids are. The school my kids attend gives Student of the Month awards five times throughout the year.  The awards focus on five different positive character traits that the school hopes to teach and witness in their students.  At an assembly one student from each class is recognized for displaying a specific trait.  In October, students with great work ethic were recognized.  In November it was responsibility.  In February students who showed compassion were recognized.  In March … Continue reading

My etsy store has been blowing up lately.  Seriously, the necklaces I sell are hot Mother’s Day gifts.  It’s amazing.  It’s wonderful.  I love it. It is, however, just little ole’ me sitting here making necklaces by hand.  So in order to fill the orders I have received everything else has been put on the back burner.  Including dishes, dinner, showers…oh, and projects.  It’s just been a few weeks of me, wrapping pearls with wire.  {And I still haven’t gotten tired of it.  That must mean I like what I do!} So as I make necklace after necklace, I haven’t … Continue reading
