Design Inspiration

final

Lately I’ve felt like I’ve been in a design rut.  It’s been a long time since I’ve overhauled a room.  I think back to school followed by the holidays puts a noticeable kink in my design plans.   Well, that’s all over now and I’ve been scouring houzz.com and Pinterest for examples of looks I love and new ideas to expand my design horizons.  I want to re-do my boys’ room, tweak my kitchen and finally overhaul our master bedroom.   Here are some ideas and looks I have found that I love.       Source: houzz.com via Heidi … Continue reading

Hi-Five!

So today I went to one of my favorite places in town…Goodwill Outlet.  It’s like Goodwill, but cheaper.  I know, amazing, right??   It is, by far, the best place to buy used furniture.  It comes pretty beat up, but with a little paint it looks good as new.   I have so many painting ideas I want to try, but I don’t have room for more furniture.  So my plan is to try out paint colors and techniques on the great furniture I find.  When I finish, I can sell it on Craigslist.   Well…unless I love, love, love … Continue reading

Faux Weathered Painted Wood Tutorial

IMG_4113

Yesterday I shared with you the Family Purpose Statement Sign I made.     And today I’m going to show you how I achieved the weathered treatment look of the wood.   Here is the old twin headboard I started with:     It was pretty stained and the finish was almost gone, but it was sturdy and well made.     The first thing I did was give it a good sanding.   I got out my palm sander and 100 grit sand paper and sanded off the rest of the finish so it was smooth beautiful wood again.  … Continue reading

What Should Eliza Look Like?

Eliza

Miss Eliza has been sitting in the garage since I bought her. She is a faded green velvet that is covered in cat hair.  The picture makes her look much more beautiful than she actually is.  Before she can move into the house she needs a new outfit. We’ve had too much going on for me to attempt to reupholster her.  But on my latest fabric store trip I found a lot of options for her.  I think she’s going to end up in our new master bedroom {we’re adding on to our house}. That means there is NO DECORATING … Continue reading

Moving On The Bench Cushions

IMG_6949

Do you know that I love my neighbors?  I have the best neighbors ever.  EVER. A few weeks ago my neighbor across the street came over bearing gifts for this DIYer.  Two big sheets of 4 inch foam.  That’s right.  Foam. That foam would have cost me $150 from a store and he gave it to me for free!  Like I said, my neighbors are awesome. Right when I saw it I knew what I’d do with it – make a bench cushion for our banquette.   Those seat cushions in the picture were temporary and have been seriously beaten … Continue reading

Rock{ing Chair} of Ages

IMG_0722

When I had my first baby, my mom gave me a rocking chair.  But not just any rocking chair.  It was my grandmother’s rocking chair.  She rocked my dad in it when he was a baby.  And my uncle.  When my mom had her first baby, my grandma passed it on to her.  My sisters were rocked in that chair.  I was rocked in that chair.  And my babies were rocked in that chair. I love that chair. I want to pass that chair on so my grandbabies can be rocked in it as well. It is beautiful and hand … Continue reading

More Surplus Sale Finds

photo-49

Earlier this week I showed you the amazing mid century chairs I found at our school district’s surplus sale.  Well, today I’m here to show you more. You see, not only did I find amazing chairs for grown ups to rest their tushies in…I found the most adorable kid chairs.  Because, where else would you find great kid chairs but at a school sale? I saw these across the room and almost ran to them. They are so colorful and cute! Again, I have no place for them.  But they are so cute that doesn’t matter.  They were $2 each. … Continue reading

Surplus Sale Treasures

photo-42

Earlier this week my husband forwarded me an email about a surplus sale that his school district was going to have.  {His note said, “I thought you’d be interested…”  I love how well he knows me!}  All the schools had been outfitted with needed chairs, tables, notebooks, shelves, etc… for the year and they were selling everything that was left over. Friday morning the kids and I headed over to the district warehouse to check out the goods.  Secretly I was hoping there would be one of those pull down wall maps from middle school history class. There wasn’t.  Such … Continue reading

Look What I Found!

IMG_1281 copy

This morning I had a date with some of my favorite ladies to get some coffee and dig through bins together at the Goodwill Outlet.  Three of my favorite things: friends, coffee and deals on used junk! For those of you who don’t know what the Goodwill Outlet is, it’s the place where all the things that don’t sell at your regular Goodwill go.  It’s disgusting.  Dirty, broken and ugly stuff fills big blue bins on wheels.  It stinks.  And most of the stuff is trash.  But there are treasures there too, if you are willing to search. Just remember … Continue reading

Ellie’s New Platform Bed

IMG_1206

For almost two months my girl has slept on a mattress on the floor.  When we moved her into her own room her brother took her place on the bottom bunk of the other room.  But the toddler bed he’d been sleeping in was much too small for a seven year old.  So we bought her a brand new mattress (I don’t like buying anything new, but getting a second hand mattress just sounded gross) from Costco and put it on the floor. Ellie is one of those kids who likes to collect things, gather things and HIDE things.  And … Continue reading
