Summer On The Road

Are you taking a road trip this summer?  We are.  Summer is just made for road trips.  Or road trips are made for summer.  Either way, it’s going to be awesome.  I am so very excited!  So much that I almost typed the word “stoked”.  Do people still use that word?

It is not going to be the epic cross country RV trip I’ve been dreaming of.  The one that would take us to New York City and back.  That one just doesn’t seem to be working out yet.  But don’t worry, it will.  Hopefully when our kids are still young enough to fit on the dinette bed and enjoy being around us.

This summer we’ll be taking that old Brady Bunch road trip.  You remember, don’t you?  It’s the Grand Canyon!  You know, when they got lost by their campsite and found that old ghost town?  Classic.  I hope we find a ghost town.

I just hope we don’t get locked in the jail cell with our shoes off.  That would not be fun.

We’ll be renting an RV for part of the summer (hopefully from friends!) and driving our temporary house on wheels down to the hot Arizona desert.  We also want to:

Visit Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah

Travel a bit of Route 66 between Arizona and California

Visit Disneyland with my sister and her family

(this has become my kids’ favorite vacation – Disneyland with the Rodrigos)

and meet up with friends in the Bay Area

The exact route and direction we’ll be traveling is still up in the air – and let’s face it…I’m not going to broadcast it here so the crazies will know where I’ll be traveling (my goal is to always out-crazy the crazies!) – but I am very excited about the possibilities.

I’ve already started thinking about what we can do to pass the time in the RV on long driving days.  Crafts anyone?  Magnetic chess?  Quiz books?  Audiobooks?  Travel documentary DVD’s?  Disney movies?  Or maybe we’ll just fix us some lunch and eat…at a table…while we’re driving!!!  How cool is that?  Can you tell I’m giddy?  I bet it’s surprising to you all that I’m already planning.  No?  You must know me well, then.

This trip is going to be epic in it’s own way.  Awesome, even.  And memorable.  And pretty freakin’ rad.

Look out Grand Canyon, our crazy family is coming and we’re bringing a house on wheels!

I am so excited I could pee!!!  But I won’t.  I hope.

  1. I wish! We took a month long road trip last year so this year probably will be spent in our home state. I love road trips. I was able to do so many things and even cross somethings off my life list. My husband and I got some much needed time to ourselves. My mom in law flew out and grabbed the kids so we had 5 days to ourselves and the kids spent time with their nana. After those 5 days we all met back up and finished the road trip together

  2. I would say stop at Zions National Park. It is so amazing! There are a number of hikes for younger kids and some great ones for the olders too. You can even start up the river and see the walls closing in and making those beautiful waves and colors. Its pretty spectacular.

  3. I agree about Zion. Also Capitol Reef is really beautiful. And Moab. Haha! It’s my old stomping grounds. :) . When will you be on the road?

  4. fun, fun, fun! I say pack simply – things that your kids tend to do when they have free time. And maybe make them each a travel journal, or something else that is just their own to document the epic journey :)

    • Travel journals are an excellent idea! They could write about their day and use it to scrapbook all of their tickets, brochures, etc… That would keep them busy. Unfortunately the thing that keeps them busy at home is usually legos and clinbing the tree int he backyard. I might be able to figure out how to transport the legos, but the tree has to stay at home. :-)
